The Maras Salt Mines, our second stop, are located in the town of Maras, which played a vital role during the Viceroyalty period as the main supplier of salt to the southern highlands, as evidenced by the church and the mansions that still bear the coats of arms of the indigenous nobility on their facades.
The Maras Salt Mines amaze visitors with their more than 3,000 pits, which are still worked today by more than 360 families who have inherited this tradition and artisanal mining practice; the Maras Sal Association is responsible for marketing the salt and has been safeguarding the community’s interests since the late 1980s.
Our tour concludes with a visit to the circular terraces of Moray, which demonstrate how the Andean people defied nature and took advantage of their geographical environment to their benefit. These circular terraces served as an agricultural laboratory that allowed them to cultivate a wide variety of species of potatoes, corn, and other crops.
At the end of the tour, we'll return to the city of Cusco.
