The Floating Islands of the Uros
Why Choose This Experience
The Uros floating islands are located in Puno Bay, 10 km from the port of Puno (a 20- to 30-minute boat ride). This tour lasts 3 hours.
The Uros were one of the oldest ethnic groups to inhabit the Altiplano, making their living by fishing and hunting birds, and relying
entirely on the totora (a lake reed), a plant they use to build their islands, houses, and rafts, and which also serves as a source of food and fuel.
The islands are built from large blocks of totora roots; they float because of the porosity of
the blocks, aided by the gases produced as they decompose. After joining these blocks together, the inhabitants lay down a layer of totora, which must be replaced every 20 days; these islands are anchored with poles.
